Largemouth Bass Digital Artwork in Progress

Here’s the latest project I’m working on. Although I love working with pencils on paper, sometimes digital media is a more practical application. With digital I can achieve depth and life-like detail on non-skeletal designs that would otherwise be impossible. Using Adobe Photoshop and a WACOM Intuos tablet, I can draw with precision and if I make a mistake I just have to hit undo.

For those who haven’t worked with digital media before, drawing with a tablet takes a bit of getting used to. I rarely ever draw at 100% opacity. This is because the lines are much too dark and I like to have the ability to blend. Just like traditional painting processes, the piece is done by layering. You block in your base colour and then build on top of it. The benefit to using digital media is that you can burn and dodge your layers, adding even more depth. You can also work in extreme detail by zooming in and focussing on a small section of the piece.

This piece is 18-inches long at 600dpi. So it’s very high resolution and can be used on small or large applications without losing detail or the image becoming pixelated.

Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this piece! 😉

Peacock Bass Commissioned Piece

This is a commissioned piece I did for Jeff Cardwell depicting a Peacock Bass launching a surprise attack on a pair of Chalceus. Was a fun piece and the largest fine art piece I’ve done to date. 16 x 20″ on 20 x 24″ watercolour paper. Original Watercolor Pencil artwork by Nick Laferriere

Smallmouth Bass Skeleton

One of the most popular gamefish in North America, the Smallmouth Bass, is a hard-fighting, aggressive predator that establishes very easily and quickly wherever it is stocked. Much of the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada have healthy populations of Smallies. Whether you fly fish, chuck plastics, walk stickbaits, or crank lipped baits, smallies are eager biters and give all walks of life a fun day on the water.

I thought that Smallmouth Bass fanatics needed a new spin on bass art. Introducing the smallie skeleton, exclusive to FISHBUM Outfitters branded apparel. Original pencil artwork by Nick Laferriere

Bruiser Bronzeback

Smallmouth Bass are one of the most aggressive and resilient freshwater gamefish available to us in North America. They are often willing biters and provide anglers with a hard fought, determined battle, head-shaking leaps, and numerous runs. They will smash topwater presentations, erupting from the water’s surface. A big, bruiser smallmouth is a great adversary for both fly anglers and conventional anglers. They’re also great for kids to get hooked on the sport!

This drawing is featured on the back of the FISHBUM Nick Laferriere Signature Bronzeback jacket. Bass are one of my favorite confidence boosting fish. After a long winter and a spring of chasing trout, a day of bass fishing is refreshing. Watercolour pencils w/ digital background Original Artwork by Nick Laferriere
